Long ago.. ok maybe a few years, I came across this word “Meh” by way of Jimmy and Wes, who would use it with great frequency. Believe it or not, there is a list out there with over 100 words that were made up and used in Simpson’s episodes. Here’s the definition of one of my favorites… Meh.
MEH
An interjection expressing apathy, general indifference, and boredom, meh does not originate with The Simpsons, but has been dramatically popularized by it. Its perhaps most notable use is in the episode “Hungry, Hungry Homer,” when Homer excitedly asks his children if they would like to go to the amusement park Blockoland. Bart and Lisa respond, “Meh”. When Homer is confused by the indifference of his children, Bart responds telling him they already said, “Meh”. Thinking that maybe Homer simply didn’t understand what Bart said, Lisa adds, “M-E-H. Meh.”
Another notable use was in the episode “Girly Edition.” When Marge says to Homer “Oh, for Pete’s sake! Why is that monkey wearing a diaper? I thought he was housebroken!”, Mojo, the helper-monkey, responds by waving his hand while saying “Meh”
For an earlier use it was said in an episode from 1995 titled “Lisa’s Wedding.” When Marge weaves “Hi Bart, I am weaving on a loom” Bart pauses to say “Meh.” Alternate theories have it originating as an alternation of the Yiddish utterance “Feh” or as the French transliteration of a goat’s bleating.
